Showing Special Forces Some Love

Why My Hero is Army Special Forces

When I came up with the idea for the X-OPS Series, the Navy SEALs were popping up in the news a lot. But with my husband’s army background, I knew that Army Special Forces had been engaged in similar action-packed and heroic work on behalf of the U.S.—they’re just a lot better in making sure people don’t hear about it. And with all the press that the SEALs were getting (gotta love a soaking wet guy in tight swim trunks), I decided it was about time for the Army Special Forces to get a little love (that Army Combat Uniform is sexy as hell, too). With that thought in mind, I pulled a Special Forces team into the ultra-covert world of the Department of Covert Ops.

The hero Landon Donovan and his A-Team are from the 5th SF Group out of Fort Campbell simply because the 5th happened to have teams in Afghanistan at the time I was writing HER PERFECT MATE (Book 1 of the series), which is where Landon is when we first meet him. But I plan to pull guys from other Groups (Book 3 has SF operators out of the 7th SF Group in Florida).

By the way…to any SF heroes and fans out there reading the series…I tried to get as much right as I could about you and your organizations, but if I screwed it up, I hope you can forgive me and accept the appreciation I’m attempting to throw your way.

He’s a High-Octane Special Ops Pro

When Special Forces Captain Landon Donovan is chosen for an assignment with the Department of Covert Operations, he’s stunned to find his new partner is a beautiful woman who looks like she couldn’t hurt a fly, never mind take down a terrorist.

She’s No Kitten

Ivy Halliwell isn’t your average covert op. She’s a feline shifter, and more dangerous than she looks. Her feline DNA means she can literally bring out the claws when things get dicey. She’s worked with a string of hotheaded military guys who’ve underestimated her special skills in the past. But when she’s partnered with special agent Donovan, a man sexy enough to make any girl purr, things begin to heat up. He doesn’t think she’s a freak-and he’s smokin’ hot. Soon they’re facing a threat even greater than anyone imagines…and an animal magnetism impossible to ignore.

“That’s our man,” Landon confirmed. “Call in air support.”

Diaz turned to follow out his instructions, but then stopped and pressed his hand to his earpiece the way he always did when he listened to something on the radio. He frowned as he spoke into the mic. “Say again, all after ‘abort.’”

Landon did a double take. Who the hell would be calling an abort now?

Diaz looked at Landon, a stunned expression on his face. “Captain, we’ve been ordered to break contact and immediately move back to the extraction point.”

“Did you tell them we have Qari in our sights and were about to call in air support?”

“Yes, sir, but it was the old man himself, and he didn’t give a crap. He wants us at the landing zone yesterday.”

Landon swore under his breath. The original plan was for his team to head to the landing zone once the mission was done, unless there was an emergency. There wasn’t an emergency and their mission wasn’t done, so why the hell would the battalion commander order them to bail? He and his team had been after Qari ever since they’d come to this country. To be pulled out now, when the big payoff was at hand, was nuts. Who knew what information they could find in that compound?

Resisting the urge to get on the radio and argue with the commander, Landon barked orders to get the gear packed.

They got to the landing zone two hours later to find a Black Hawk waiting for them, rotors turning. Landon immediately headed for it, only to stop when his executive officer, Major Bennett, stepped off the bird. Some serious shit had obviously hit the fan for the battalion’s executive officer to be out here.

“Major,” he said.

“Captain.” Bennett surveyed Landon’s teammates with a critical eye before turning back to him. “You’re the only one who’s going out on the Black Hawk. I’m taking over your team.”

He sure as hell hadn’t expected that. No formalities. No Hey, great job finding Qari. Just a harsh, straightforward I’m taking over your team.

Landon glanced over his shoulder to see his teammates looking at him in disbelief. He felt as if he’d just been hit with a ton of bricks. Well, he wasn’t going anywhere without some answers. That might take time, though, and he didn’t want his guys exposed out there while he got them.

“Set up a perimeter,” he said to Angelo, then turned back to Bennett. “Sir, am I being relieved of command, and if so, why?”

“No, Captain, you’re not. You came down on orders. That’s why you’re being pulled out.”

“An absolutely perfect story-one I honestly couldn’t put down. One of the best books I’ve read in years. I hope this is the beginning of a very long series, because I definitely want more of Paige Tyler’s shifters.” – Kate Douglas, author of the bestselling Wolf Tales and Spirit Wild series

“A wild, hot, and sexy ride from beginning to end! I loved it!” – Terry Spear, USA Today bestselling author of A SEAL in Wolf’s Clothing

“Ladies and gents, here’s to another new author, another great series and another awesome couple on my list!  Ivy and Landon are bad asses alone, but together they are unstoppable. The best female/male team hands down!  Not only do they work well on the field but man, they work
well on each other! Ivy and Landon are hot, period. Her Perfect Mate is a perfect blend of action packed scenes and kick ass characters all wrapped up in a sexy and seductive story that will have you reading until the wee hours of the night.”

Riveting, Action packed, Sexy scenes and chemistry between two characters that will have you needing ice water to cool down!  This book was fantastic!  Landon is everything you want in a military hero hot, strong, not afraid to show he has a softer side and did I say hot?

Ivy is one extremely kick ass heroine and I am all about kick ass.  I am not a fan of the type that whine and can’t do anything for themselves.  Well she is sexy and she can hold her own.  These two make an explosive pair!

Ivy hasn’t had the best of partners so she is a little skeptical on why Landon is so nonchalant about what she is telling him and what he sees.  Landon, well, he just wants to know why he was taken out in the middle of his mission and wants to know now.  When these two have their first training session it is quite obvious that the chemistry is only going to get hotter and they make a excellent pair.  And Landon wants to know exactly where these claw marks came from!   WHAT!?

You’ll have to read the book to find out, no spoilers here!!!

I gave this book 4 1/2 HOOTS!!!

Review by Amy for First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones

I loved this book!! Charley was sarcastic and the witty comments hooked me. The fact that she finds trouble or trouble finds her keeps you trying to figure out what is going to happen next. I will definitely be recommending this book to people.

Against the Wild by Kat Martin review

This is my very first Kat Martin book and to say I loved it would be an understatement.  I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Dylan has bought a Lodge and wants Lane to be the designer, after he met and want to go out with her.  Lane is a designer in Beverly Hills, CA and lost someone very dear to her but is very attracted to Dylan.  Although there are a few snags in between I loved how these 2 are with each other.  Finn, Emily and Caleb just add to this great story and I love that every page kept you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happened next!!!

I love how I can read a kick ass book that leaves you with emotions you didn’t know were wanting to come out!  I laugh, I cried, I got nervous and I felt happy.  Not many books can do that to me.  I can’t wait to read more by this author and I certainly can’t wait for book 2 of this series

I gave this book: 5 Hoots

**This book was received complimentary by Netgalley and the publisher for an honest review.  It is my own opinion and not a paid review**

This was my first New Adult Urban a Fantasy and I loved it!  I was so glad too and this book was fantastic!  Loved the world building and there was a lot of info but not so much that it confused you or bored you.  This world building was perfect, the action was superb and the hilarious antics were just what I need in a book.  Needless to say this book has everything I need to feel awed and stuck to my chair so that I could sink into the world.  Halle is a forced to be reckoned with and I’m anxious for more!

The second I saw the man Trevor was salivating over step onto the curb and adjust his mirrored shades, it triggered a memory. As did his spectacular body beneath his tight, long-sleeved shirt—nary an inch of skin showing. Not to mention his chiseled face that had a light dusting of whiskers around the chin—a face I’d thought I’d never see again. Only now, fully dressed, he gave off more of a paramilitary vibe. Maybe I’d forgotten the scary aspects about him, but his looks still lingered in my mind all these months later.

“I think I know him,” I said under my breath.

Four months ago, I gave Lexi a ride home. Reno Cole, Austin’s brother, was outside throwing horseshoes in the yard without a shirt on. A thin sheen of sweat covered his broad torso, which was the only thing I noticed since he was wearing sunglasses and a baseball hat. I had a “stupid” attack and almost tripped in front of him. I’d never felt more intimidated by a man’s presence in my life. I felt cowardly and my mouth refused to work, and when it finally did, I mentioned something about the heat like I was a walking weathergirl. Reno’s fit body spanned just over six feet, but his expression was tight and menacing. I shamelessly fled the scene, but the tire on my car wedged into a pothole. He stalked over as if he might rip my car door off and pummel me for messing up their driveway.

But he didn’t. He pushed the car free and I never saw him again.

Fingers snapped in front of my face and Trevor gave me a killer smile. “Nice to see you still have a pulse. I was beginning to think your libido took a permanent vacation.”

About the Author
This is the segment where you learn a little more about who I am, so here’s what I can tell you:  I drink copious amounts of vitamin water placed precariously close to my laptop while writing. These are two healthy habits I have no intention of breaking. I’m a transplant living in the south, but I was born in the 70’s to a military dad who moved us around the world.
When I’m not writing (which is all the time), I’m hunting down Indie music, watching movies, reading, eating Tex-Mex, discovering new ways to humiliate myself bowling, and burning up my laptop battery on the Internet. I have a relaxed, easy-going personality and don’t like drama. I live with a cat who thinks she is a dog, or a goat (she eats plastic, so I’m not sure which).
Throughout my life, I’ve had insomnia. Counting sheep never worked and eventually I would imagine those sheep were the sole source of food after an apocalyptic battle where only thousands survived. I made up stories in a futile attempt to bore myself to sleep. The problem was, I got so wrapped up in my “head stories” that I would continue them through the following nights, changing it up each time to make it more exciting. Eventually, I started writing my ideas down – creating short stories, and then I discovered my love for poetry.
It’s almost embarrassing how many spiral notebooks and stacks of paper I have of poetry and lyrics.
Another passion: digital art. I design all my book covers, marketing, and series art. I’m a very visual person and pursued photography as an avid hobby for many years.
I am not a YA author (I feel like I have to state this only because I’ve had a few people ask), but I think it’s wonderful there are so many books available to teens in Urban Fantasy and Paranormal.
I am finally doing what I have always wanted to do: giving my characters a pulse through writing full time. I focus on adult urban fantasy romance, but I don’t like labels and I enjoy blending genres to break out of the confines of predictability.
But it’s what I love to do.

Primal Hunger

Pendragon Gargoyles Book 1

When the sun goes down, passion is unleashed.

Kennedy Beaumont loves her bartending job, even if her spirited nature sometimes gets her in trouble. Like threatening to hose down one of Pendragon’s co-owners. When it comes to Tristan, she could use a good hosing down herself—maybe it’ll help her stop casting him as the star of her wickedest dreams. Since he goes out of his way to avoid her, it ought to be easy to put him out of her head—until he reluctantly offers her a ride home.

Gargoyle shape-shifter Tristan Callaghan hasn’t had time for anything other than recovering the mystical dagger that was used to permanently lock his brother in a prison of stone. The cat inside him should have stopped craving Kennedy’s touch long ago, but now that she’s sitting next to him in his car, his very human need for her is sharper than ever.

The distraction is costly. In a split second, Kennedy finds herself thrust into a dangerous, millennia-old hunt for Excalibur. A hunt that marks her for death—and leaves Tristan with a painful choice—sacrifice his family, his quest…or the one woman meant to be his.

Primal Pleasure

Pendragon Gargoyles Book 3

He will have his revenge…one wicked seduction at a time.

Emma is used to getting dragged into her twin sister’s magical messes, but this time her predicament is more than a minor annoyance. She’s chained to a cat shifter that her sister encased in a curse of stone. Worse, the unfortunate gargoyle’s waking up. And her sister’s not there to take the heat.

After a century suspended in stone, Cian would do anything to get his hands on the sorceress who put him there. Strangely, his dreams of revenge turn into an animal hunger to put his hands all over her—in every delightfully wicked way imaginable.

Never as talented as her sister, Emma doesn’t trust her own magic. But for now she must let Cian believe she’s the culprit in order to strike a bargain: to permanently lift the curse in exchange for his tracking skills to find her missing sister. The longer she is near him, though, the closer she comes to surrendering much more than her body to the brutal warrior.

As their attraction catches fire, Emma dreads what could happen when he learns the truth. If he will sacrifice her to break the spell…or fight for a love that goes beyond animal instinct.

Realm Walker by Kathleen Collins Guest Post

My Advice to Writers

If you are anything like me than you have received the advice to ‘never give up’ over and over again. And generally it’s coming from an author who published their first book after only five rejections or an agent who’s already rejected you and you think ‘what do they know’.

Well now you’re going to hear it again, only this time it’s coming from someone who has been where you are. Realm Walker is not my first, second or even third book. It is, in fact, my fifth. I started submitting this book almost two years before I sold it to Carina. It went through so many changes (including a POV shift) that it isn’t even recognizable as that original book anymore. It was rejected over 100 times and I thought many times about just giving up and setting it aside.

But I loved this book. I love the world it’s set in, the characters and the story. I wasn’t ready to let it die. So I tried again and this time I sold not only it, but the second book in the series which hadn’t even been written yet. And I’ll tell you something, all those changes I made to get this book to what it is today made it a better book.

My fourth book sat on my shelf of shame for several years, mainly because it was completely devoid of any kind of emotional conflict. I pulled it out completely rewrote it and got an agent after only three weeks of querying. I think I sent ten total and pitched four agents in person and as opposed to rejections, I withdrew most of those when I signed with my agent.

What about those first three books you ask? They will never, ever see the light of day. I might revive a character or two, or steal a plot thread, but those books are horrible. And I kind of knew that even as I was writing them. I had to learn the craft, learn what worked and what didn’t. The time and effort I put forth on those books was worth it simply because it helped me improve my skills. A minute spent writing is never a wasted minute.

So take it from someone that’s been there. Keep working, keep writing and keep trying. You never know when it might pay off.

Music I write by

I love music and I’m always looking for new songs and albums (CDs) to add to my playlists. When it comes to music I have an eclectic taste. I love all kinds and my playlist are always changing according to my mood.

Music helps me focus and sometimes helps the muse with the flow of the story. Most the time it’s background noise, but there are times when I let the words or the sound of it to help soothe and guide the characters a little. I listen to hard rock for fight scenes, softer music like classical and instrumental pieces for other scenes.

So what’s on my playlist for Ashwood Falls? Here is a list of just a few that don’t leave the list when I start a new book in the series.

When he discovers that just being near her calms the storm inside him, he can’t stay away even if it means exposing her to the evil she tried to escape.

Over a hundred years of psychological torture at the hands of the rogue Onyx Pack has left Addyson with no memories of her life before captivity and with the inability to control her psychometric nature. Anything or anyone she touches sends her into their darkest past and secrets, causing her pain she wouldn’t wish on anyone. Without the ability to control it, she’s forced to deny her leopard the connection she craves from the Pack that welcomed her with love and without judgment. That is, until the day Keegan involuntarily touches her bare skin and she finds the peace she’d craved for far too long.

He stepped closer and studied her as she turned back to the omelet. Keegan ground his molars, took a deep breath, and calmly asked, “Do you like it here?”

She peered back at him, her eyebrows bunched together before she smoothed out her features in that practiced control she used around others. “It’s not home, but it’s nice. I don’t need much, Keegan.”

He took another step toward her. She turned the stove off and handed Will his plate. The boy stood, watching Keegan as if he would harm Addyson. It made Keegan proud of the kid that he’d want to protect Addyson.

Without looking at the teen, Keegan said, “Will, take your breakfast in the living room and eat before it gets cold.”

From the corner of his eye, Keegan saw Will peer at Addyson. When she gave him a nod, he left them alone. Keegan took another step forward, stopping inches from her. He heard her heart beat speed up and smelled her strawberry scent intensify, but not in fear. She was turned on by his presence.

He inhaled deeply, taking in her scent. His leopard rubbed up against his chest, trying to feel Addyson. He’d never imagine in the past thirty-seven years that he’d find another mate. Then Addyson stumbled into his life about twelve years after losing Cate. He wasn’t ready then, the pain still too raw to see what the leopard tried to make him see.

He’d finally started to accept it, accept the fact that Addyson has a place in his heart and in his bed.

About Cheryl Douglas

Cheryl began her professional career as a nutritionist, but her love of books started at an early age. She studied writing for many years before she decided to pursue her passion as a full-time career. After receiving constructive criticism from several well-known authors, Cheryl finally had the confidence to write her first romance novel.

The first book in the Nashville Nights series, Shameless, was a book that had been dwelling in Cheryl’s subconscious for years. For her, the surprise came when the manuscript began taking on a life of it’s own. Characters came to life, secondary characters became more prominent, outlines were forgotten, and a single title evolved into an eight book series, and another eight book spin-off series entitled Nashville Nights, Next Generation.

One word would aptly describe Cheryl: workaholic. She lives and breathes her writing, when she’s sleeping, watching TV, driving, reading… it’s always in the periphery of her mind. Her imagination rarely takes a holiday, even when she escapes to a sandy beach with her husband and son, she’s planning, plotting, outlining, and daydreaming.

Cheryl feels blessed to be able to get up every day and do something she loves. The thousands of fans who have embraced the Nashville Nights series have made that possible. She writes for the readers who ask for more, she writes to satisfy the muse residing inside of her, but most of all, she writes because she couldn’t imagine doing anything else with her life. It took her thirty-seven years to decide what she wanted to be when she grew up, but now that she knows, she’s convinced she’s found her purpose.
